Mendip Ring +

Farrington Gurney, Litton, Chewton Mendip, 10 miles

This walk starts from the car park on Church Lane near the Village Hall Grid Ref ST631556.

It follows the Mendip Ring as far as Wotton Hall then returns via Chewton Mendip, & Ston Easton. The walk has fine views of Chew Valley Lake and the surrounding countryside passing through the pretty villages of Litton and Chewton Mendip. At the end of the walk there is a nice cafe at Farrington Farm Shop which you pass at the end of this walk.

1.
Leave the car park, turn right along the road to reach the A39 turn left, cross the road then right into Pitway Lane, turn left at the first footpath and follow it through several fields to enter Easton Wood, on through Hengrove Wood, on reach a track turn left along this to reach a T junction, take the path slightly to your right through Chewton Wood, to reach the fields, now follow the path across several fields at a junction ignore the path off to the left keeping straight ahead to reach a lane, cross this keeping in the same direction continue on to reach a stile and bridge at the end of the field. Turn left and follow the path along the river to reach the village via a stile, turn right along the road to reach the B3114.

Turn right then after passing Back Lane take the first footpath on the left follow the hedge uphill over the stiles at the top, now aim slightly right for the edge of the wood at the top of the hill, follow it round to pass through another gate and on to enter Litton Wood via a stile in the corner of the field, follow the path through the wood to reach a gate (the map differs from the path here) so once through the gate follow the path along the fence on your right through another gate and out through a car park to the Ford Lane. You now leave the Mendip Ring. Turn left follow the lane to the junction with Primmerfield Lane, continue straight on then, take the footpath on the right following this to reach a junction of paths at the top of the hill, turn left here follow this path down into Watery Combe, cross the track at the bottom, through the gate continue up the hill and follow the path across the fields to reach Chewton Mendip Church.

Follow the path down the lane to reach the A39 cross the road into the tarmac path opposite and on reaching the lane at the top cross this and enter the bridleway opposite, on reaching the junction at the top turn left into Drials Lane on reaching Coles Lane, turn right and at the next junction turn left into another lane, at a sharp right turn take the path up through the woods to reach Worberry Lane enter the path opposite and go diagonally across these fields to reach a junction of lanes, enter Green Street then turn right into the footpath to reach the A37 at Ston Easton.

Enter the lane opposite signed to Clapton and take the first path on the left follow the path round the edge of Ston Easton Park through Terrace Wood to reach Farrington Golf Course follow the path marked by the white posts through the golf course (which is not very well defined) on reaching Marsh Lane at the top of the hill turn right and follow the lane downhill to reach the A362 turn right then left into Main Street where this bends left follow the path straight ahead into a field turn left through a gate and follow the road back to reach the car park.
